Step by Step Instructions on Obtaining Your Florida Class D Unarmed Security License

Notice: Applicants must complete 40 hours of training prior to applying for a Class D license. There is dated information on the Web which mistakenly informs readers that they may apply after taking the first 28 hours. That has not been the case since 2012 when the law changed and now requires the completion of all 40 hours of training.

• 1. Review the pre-qualifications checklist. This checklist provides the basic requirments which determine the eligibility of the applicant. Do you qualify? If so, proceed to step 2.
• 2. Download the Class D Application Packet published by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. This helpful thirty page packet contains the 5 page Application For Security Officer License, instructions for completing the application and a rendition of Chapter 493 of the Florida Statutes: the section of law which regulates the security industry in Florida. Take a close look at Part III of the regulations. This section may be found on page 15 of the packet and specifically applies to private security services.

TIP! Certain applicants are eligible for the waiver of the Class D application fee. To qualify for the waiver the applicant must have received a discharge from the military within 24 months preceding the time of their application for a Class D license. Those who claim the waiver should be prepared to provide official documentation of their service.
